General Health Measures
In all matters of health, CBE takes direction from Alberta Education and Alberta Health Services. Find out how you can reduce the spread and lessen the impact of illness in school communities.
Routine Immunizations
The CBE supports the AHS school-based immunization program.
Attendance Line 403-777-6130 ext. 1.
It is important that you call the school if your child is going to be absent or arriving late.
Injuries at School
Should your child be injured at school the following procedure will be followed:
- A school administrator, teacher, or support staff will take action to ensure the safety of the student and administer minor first aid. The majority of our school staff have Standard First Aid training.
- If the injury is of a more serious nature, the parent or guardian will be telephoned and informed of the situation and asked for direction regarding medical care. It may be necessary for the parent to come to the school and take their child for medical treatment.
- If we are unable to contact the parent/guardian or emergency contact in critical situations, the administrator in charge will decide if emergency services need to be activated. If emergency treatment appears to be necessary, 9-11 will be called and the child may be transported by ambulance to hospital and the parents or guardian will be advised as soon as possible.
Medical Alerts
If your child has special medical requirements (e.g. allergic reactions, epilepsy, asthma, precautions due to medical conditions, etc.) please ensure that this information is provided to the school staff at the beginning of the school year and updated as necessary. If you have a child with a severe allergy or medical condition it is imperative to notify the school as soon as possible upon registering your child.
Medication
Parents or guardians requesting school assistance with their child’s medical needs are required to complete the following forms.
Student Health Emergency Response Protocol Form
- This form is to be used when there is a student health issue requiring attention. This includes when there is a request to administer medication.
This form is to be:
- completed if a physical or medical condition may affect the student’s attendance at school
- completed if medication is to be taken at school
- reviewed and updated annually or sooner if there is a change in the student’s health concern or school registration.
*Please do not send your child with any medication in their lunch bag or backpack without the appropriate notification to the school staff.
Communicable Diseases
Young students are susceptible to communicable diseases in the community. If your child does become ill, for the protection of your child and that of schoolmates, keep him/her at home until treated and/or recovered. Under the Health Act some diseases require exclusion for specified periods of time. (E.g. COVID, measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, pink eye, lice, etc.) Please follow the medical advice given by your doctor and inform the school of any illnesses. If your child becomes ill at school, parents or designated emergency contacts will be notified to come and take the child home.
If your child is sick, please keep them at home. We are unable to supervise children who are sick at school for extended periods of time.
Allergies
We are committed to providing a safe environment that is inclusive for all children. A number of our students have a potentially life-threatening allergy to peanut and tree nuts. Parents of children with allergies must fill out appropriate forms (also available in the office) and ensure the school has the necessary medication on-hand should a reaction occur. We ask that parents who are sending in classroom treats, please avoid the noted products. Staff is trained annually in the administration of an Epipen.
Health Services
The Calgary Health Region supports our school community by providing nursing services one-half day per week. These services include:
- Acting as a support and resource for students and families
- Providing health information to students, teachers, and parents
- Providing health screening (such as hearing and vision)
- Acting as a resource about the common diseases of children
- Providing immunizations
You can contact our Public Health Nurse by leaving a message at our school, or by contacting the Acadia Community Health Center at 403-944-7180.
Lice
There may be times during the school year when we have cases of head lice.
If your child has head lice, please contact the school and let us know. If your child has been exposed to lice at school we will notify you.
As a precaution, we ask all parents to check their child’s head frequently for a few weeks after any exposure. You can find more information on lice from myhealth.alberta.ca.
